Within the framework of the visit to the Spratly Islands from April 17–23, 2026, Dr. Phan Dao – Director of the European Cooperation Center (ECC), Ton Duc Thang University – participated in Delegation No. 10 as a member of the Czech overseas Vietnamese group, together with Mr. Hoang Dinh Thang, President of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Europe, and Ms. Nguyen Thi Kien, Vice President of the Vietnamese Women’s Association in the Czech Republic. The mission was organized by the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs in coordination with the Vietnam People’s Navy.
The KN490 naval vessel gathered more than 200 delegates, including 48 overseas Vietnamese from 22 countries, along with representatives from various ministries, sectors, and major organizations, creating a meaningful and highly connected journey.
During the voyage of over 1,000 nautical miles, the delegation visited and worked at seven islands and offshore platforms, including Song Tu Tay Island, where on April 19, 2026, Dr. Phan Dao, representing ECC, presented gifts to officers and soldiers stationed on the island, expressing the care and solidarity of the academic community and overseas Vietnamese.
In addition, the Vietnamese communities in the Czech Republic and Poland jointly contributed VND 250 million to support the Navy’s “Greening Truong Sa” initiative, including the construction of a second vegetable garden project on one of the islands.
Beyond practical activities, the journey also left a strong cultural and emotional impression. Dr. Phan Dao’s poem “Truong Sa – A Journey to Remember” was awarded Second Prize in the 2026 Truong Sa creative competition (literature, poetry, music, and arts), reflecting authentic emotions drawn from the voyage.
The mission not only provided overseas Vietnamese with a deeper understanding of the lives and resilience of soldiers and civilians in remote islands, but also strengthened their sense of responsibility, connection, and pride toward the homeland.
For each of us, Truong Sa is no longer a distant place, but a profound and sacred part of our memory.
